Since April 2023, Sudan has been torn by a brutal civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), leaving millions displaced and civilians devastated. Hundreds of thousands have sought refuge in the remote, impoverished Nuba Mountains, where famine looms and militias besiege the cities. In one of the few hospitals, surgeon Joseph Yacoub and his team struggle to treat hundreds daily with limited resources while training two apprentices—Nidal Difan, who hopes to become the region’s first female surgeon, and former soldier Aziz Burma—to carry on his vital work.
